Today is Bonfire Night (also called Guy Fawkes or Plot Night) in England. We remember the night when a plot to blow up Parliament and the King was foiled and the status quo in England maintained. Find out more about this night.

This week

We're having a look at prepositions with adjectives this week in our grammar exercises.

The reading on Tuesday is a letter sent to a bank manager which is packed with ironic language and hints on how you can interpret and use this to effect!

Our listening describes the experiences of a school girl working on a project in Kenya - you have a choice of a short or longer comprehension exercise or do both!!

Our short story is The Stranger by John Gabriel. A mysterious stranger appears at the door one day and brings back memories of an incident long ago.

In Friday's People in Conversation we hear from Jill who describes her day to day life in a London hospital.

  • 'Words of the Day' 401 to 500 will be available in PDF format to download next week.
  • Our teacher network 'Mentors ' is now live, sign up in your member area - we'll have our first message board discussion on dictionaries - what is your favourite and why?

  • Look out for new crosswords and word searches. This area has been a little neglected of late but has had a 'face lift' and will be bringing new puzzles to test your vocabulary.
  • Our next forum is Monday 19th at 16.00 GMT - the topic will be online learning.
