In today's world of email writing is important

Your writing says a lot about you. It tells the reader about your ability to organise your thoughts, your agility with words and grammatical structure and also your attention to detail in your spelling and checking.

Going it alone with writing is not always a good idea. Checking with a spell-check sometimes produces bizarre results and not getting it proof-read can leave lots of mistakes which assault the reader badly!

(I know this because I am guilty of this too - no matter how well we check there will often be mistakes that we don't see)

Imagine then, if you are preparing writing for an exam or for a line manager or customer to see!

How important is it to make sure that your writing is well presented and free from errors?

Top Tips:

- get someone else to check it they will see things that you don't.

- read it out loud - this will help you to spot errors

- if it's for an exam or important customer make sure the person who checks it know what they are doing otherwise you might get into hot water!

This month's newsletter focuses on writing skills.

Here are some writing exercises for you to try:

Use of synonyms in your writing helps to make it more interesting and fresh - lots of repetition doesn't come over well to the reader (important if you want to get a high IELTS band!)

An Exercise based on synonyms A

Another synonym exercise

Spelling is also important in writing spelling mistakes can be very irritating to the reader - especially with everyday words. You don't want to annoy your IELTS examiner so check you can spell these words!

Need help with writing?

We have a correction/feedback service here on Gapfillers for writing- just go to Member Home/Account/Subscription/Credits and you can buy credits from us to send your writing.

All the instructions are there and we would love to look at your writing (score it for IELTS if you need this) and give you great feedback on how to improve!!

Why sharing your writing might be a good idea!

Writing is a 'public' affair! Except for personal diaries, most writing has an audience.

Getting people to read your writing gives it life and also give you the chance of getting some feedback.

Here on Gapfillers we have provided a few places where you can 'publish' your writing for other members to read and make comments.

So, don't be shy - add YOUR writing to these pages and see what feedback you get!

The Wiki

Our Gapfillers wiki has 4 topics at the moment - virtual weekends, recipes, Haiku (a short poem) and hobbies why not add your ideas to these themes.

You can find the wiki on the Home Page and all the instructions for making YOUR contribution are on the wiki pages.

We also have a Gapfillers blog section where you can write your own blog and share it with everybody.

There are a couple of short examples. Create these in Member Home and then publish!

Let us know if you need any help with either the Wiki or Blogs.

Some sentences with word of the day:

  • by Olusegun.Ogundele - Hi,Right away , I must leave the house for church.
  • by rezaiguia -hi, I'm not cut out to be a hero.
  • by ibrahim.shah - i have used up all my mobile credit and nothing is remaining for next month
  • by Adel.Ansari - I couldn't understand this sentence completely: I'm afraid I shall use up all my brains too quickly, and I haven't got so very many.

These are fantastic examples and when you actually USE the words and phrases you will have a better chance of remembering them!

Some general comments:

  • by Carlita.B.Cudiaman - I wonder how we can differentiate the usage of mis-use from dis-use and useless in any sentence. Thank you for sending in via my email your response. Have a wonderful day! My best regards, too.
  • by fazal.amin - Dear Madam thank you so much for making this website and with us in this critical situation , i really enjoy this website
  • by Mebrahtom.Haile.Zewe - I think this very helpful for people like me to practice English as a second language and also for IELTS preparation

So, what has been happening on Gapfillers lately?

GapChat

We are still struggling with this as quite often nobody comes along!

We have asked you for your preferred time and also some of your ideas and opinions on GapChat and these have been very positive!

The poll closes this week and we'll let you all know the most popular time - if your time doesn't get chosen then don't worry as if enough people come along then we can add a second chat time - so it's up to YOU!!

Speaking buddies

I mentioned this in the last newsletter and I have seen more messages asking to share SKYPE names to make speaking buddy groups.

If you are interested in finding people to speak on Skype with then simply leave a message in Member Home asking people to reply and then exchange your Skype details. That's all there is to it!

If you have left a message and not got a reply let me know and I'll try and put you in touch with other Gapfillers members who want to speak to each other on SKYPE!! (don't forget to tell me that you want to find speaking buddies)

Happy Chatting!
