Clues to disappearance of the giant rabbit
Allotment-holders at Felton may be able to breathe a sigh of relief after an Alnwick teenager admitted she may have unwittingly killed the village were-rabbit. Rael Rawlinson, 18, of Percy Terrace, was driving on the road linking the village to the A1 with friends late at night, four weeks ago today. She claims she saw a "massive" and "abnormally big" bunny run out across the road in front of her but was unable to stop and so the creature was squashed beneath her wheels. Her car's bumper was cracked by the impact, Rael adds, and was left virtually hanging off. A tuft of rabbit fur was found on it.
The A-level student at Duchess's High School said: "I heard there was a big rabbit at Felton so I thought it might be that one.
"When I got out and had a look, it was kind of stretched out on the ground. It was about two foot long. It was really tall as well. I left it but I wished I had picked it up now.
"I had seen it in the paper, I did not really think much of it at first. My friends said straightaway it has got to be that rabbit and I thought that as well."
Although her story would explain the were-rabbit's sudden disappearance, Rael has encountered some doubt when telling her tale.
"They did not really believe me at first. Someone said they saw it on the road and said how big it was. People have just been laughing about it really."
